Frequently Asked Questions
Insurance & Financial Information
Do you accept insurance?
Orofacial Pain Associates is a fee-for-service practice and is not contracted with medical or dental insurance plans.
Can I submit to my insurance for reimbursement?
Yes. We provide detailed superbills that you may submit to your insurance company for potential reimbursement. Please note: patients with Medicare or Medicaid are not eligible to submit claims from our office due to our opt-out status.
Why don’t you accept insurance?
We operate as a fee-for-service specialty practice so we can provide longer visits, more comprehensive evaluations, and highly individualized care without the restrictions and limitations often placed by insurance plans.
This approach allows us to focus on diagnosis and treatment based on what each patient actually needs, rather than what is covered. It also gives us the time needed to fully evaluate complex or multifactorial conditions and, when appropriate, begin initial treatment during the same visit.
While we do not bill insurance directly, we can provide detailed superbills that patients may submit for potential out-of-network reimbursement. Coverage can vary significantly by plan, so we recommend checking with your insurance provider about out-of-network benefits.
How much does treatment cost?
Costs vary depending on the type and complexity of the evaluation and any treatment provided. Because each patient’s condition is unique, we do not offer a single flat fee for care.
Your visit typically includes a comprehensive evaluation, and in some cases, initial treatment may be provided during the same appointment. After your assessment, we will clearly review any recommended treatment and associated costs before proceeding.
If you have specific questions about cost prior to your visit, we are happy to help you understand what to expect.
Do you offer payment plans?
We do not offer in-house payment plans. However, we partner with Cherry Financing and accept CareCredit, which may provide flexible payment options for eligible patients, subject to approval.
What forms of payment are accepted?
- Cash is accepted only if the exact amount is provided, as we are unable to make change.
- Credit and debit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover)
- Checks
- FSA/HSA
Appointments & Getting Started
Do I need a referral to schedule an appointment?
Because we are a fee-for-service practice and are not contracted with medical or dental insurance plans, no referral is required. Patients are welcome to schedule directly. However, we also work closely with referring providers when applicable.
What can I expect at my first visit?
Your initial visit is a comprehensive evaluation focused on understanding your symptoms, medical history, and contributing factors. This includes a detailed discussion, clinical examination, and review of any prior imaging or records. Time is also spent providing education about your condition, and in some cases, initial treatment may be started.
How long is the first appointment?
Initial visits are typically 60-90 minutes depending on the complexity of your condition.
Do you offer virtual visits or telehealth?
No. All appointments must be completed in person.
What should I bring to my appointment?
If available, please bring:
- A list of current medications
- Recent imaging (CBCT, MRI, or X-rays)
- Relevant dental or medical records including lab and pathology reports if applicable
- Completed new patient forms (if not already submitted online)
How do I schedule an appointment?
